Staying with us means having the Zermatt mountain world right on your doorstep: the railway station, the valley station of the Gornergrat Bahn and the Sunnegga funicular are just a few minutes' walk from the Mirabeau. Nine destinations we especially recommend to our guests — from panoramic rides to hikes:

Blauherd At 2,571 metres, Blauherd is a sun-drenched plateau between the Sunnegga and Rothorn mountain stations, reached by gondola from Sunnegga. This is where the famous 5-Lakes Walk begins, marmots feel right at home, and the large wooden heart is a favourite spot for photos. Those craving speed can rent a mountain cart and race down the roughly 300 metres in altitude to Sunnegga. The Matterhorn stays in view the whole way.

Edelweiss in the Trift Valley This hike starts right in the village: through the Trift gorge and a larch forest, a well-built but steep path leads up to the Pension Edelweiss at 1,961 metres — with one of the finest views over Zermatt. In summer, rare alpine flowers bloom along the path, including edelweiss, gentian and mountain orchids. Those with energy to spare can continue on to the Trift mountain inn at 2,337 metres, set in a broad basin beneath the Obergabelhorn and Zinalrothorn — homemade apple cake included.

Findeln The hamlet of Findeln, with its sun-weathered Valais wooden houses, sits at around 2,050 metres on the slope above Zermatt, reached from Sunnegga in a short walk. The Matterhorn stands there as if painted into the frame. Findeln is famous for its remarkable concentration of restaurants: Chez Vrony and Findlerhof each hold 14 GaultMillau Switzerland points, and @paradise holds 13 — lunch on one of these terraces is one of the finest indulgences Zermatt has to offer. The walk back down to the village leads pleasantly through the larch forest.

Gornergrat Since 1898, the Gornergrat Bahn has run as Europe's highest open-air cogwheel railway, climbing from Zermatt to 3,089 metres. At the top, one of the Alps' most magnificent mountain panoramas unfolds: the Monte Rosa massif, the Gorner Glacier and more than 20 four-thousand-metre peaks. A classic is the short descent from Rotenboden station to Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn is mirrored on a still day. The trip is worthwhile in any season.

Hörnli Hut The Hörnli Hut sits at 3,260 metres at the foot of the Hörnli ridge and serves as the base camp for ascents of the 4,478-metre Matterhorn. The hike there begins at Schwarzsee and takes around two hours — an alpine trail with sweeping views down into the valley. The hut welcomes guests in summer, and those sitting on its terrace get as close to the Matterhorn as only mountaineers usually do. Sure-footedness and proper footwear are essential.

Klein Matterhorn – Matterhorn Glacier Paradise At 3,883 metres lies Europe's highest cable car station — the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. The ride from Zermatt passes through Furi and Trockener Steg up into a world of glaciers, where snow lies year-round. At the top await a viewing platform looking out over dozens of four-thousanders as far as Mont Blanc, and the Glacier Palace carved into the ice. A high-alpine experience that needs neither rope nor crampons.

Schwarzsee Schwarzsee lies at 2,552 metres directly beneath the Matterhorn; on its shore stands the chapel Maria zum Schnee — a pilgrimage site dating back to the early 18th century, reflected in the dark water when the air is still. The Matterhorn Express gondola carries guests comfortably up via Furi. Hiking trails circle the lake, from a gentle loop to the climb towards the Hörnli Hut. The mountain restaurant by the lake completes the outing.

Sunnegga Switzerland's first fully underground funicular carries guests up to Sunnegga at 2,288 metres in just a few minutes. At the top, a marmot-watching post and the nearby Leisee lake await, inviting a swim — complete with a children's playground on the shore. Sunnegga is Zermatt's family mountain and the starting point for numerous themed trails. The view of the Matterhorn is, as ever, part of the package.

Unterrothorn The large cable car climbs from Blauherd to the summit of the Unterrothorn at 3,103 metres. From here, the Matterhorn appears in perhaps its most perfect pyramid form — the view stretches across the 38 four-thousand-metre peaks surrounding Zermatt. In summer, the cable car runs every Tuesday morning for sunrise, breakfast with the alpine herders included. A summit experience par excellence.
