At Rothorn Paradise, you experience the Matterhorn from its most photogenic side, and enjoy an unforgettable view of the four-thousanders (peaks higher than 4000m) which surround Zermatt. The highest art exhibition in the world, 'The Peak Collection', gives observers a more intimate view of the mountainous world of Zermatt in a unique manner.
At Schwarzsee Paradise, the Matterhorn can be admired from very close range. Enjoy the idyllic atmosphere of the lake and the chapel 'Maria zum Schnee' (Mary of the Snows) with its beautiful legend.
The journey from Zermatt to the Gorner Ridge takes about 40 minutes. As the rack railway – built in 1898 and incidentally Switzerland's first electric rack railway – winds its way up the mountain, the Matterhorn appears ever larger and grander, while the village of Zermatt looks more and more like a cluster of doll's houses.

The fascinating history of the Matterhorn is told - from its African origins, to the terribly dramatic first ascent, right through to present day. Also told, is the history of Zermatt, the little farming village which became an internationally famous health resort.
Zermatt is a piece of the real Switzerland, with its typical locals: shy mountain folk, proud patriots, amiable children of nature. Today, many inhabitants of Zermatt still live in old Valaisian wooden chalets. The storehouses 'on stilts' are also typical. Savour a leisurely stroll along Bahnhofstrasse – time for a spot of shopping, or a midday meal in a fine restaurant. All the while, the Matterhorn remains in view.
